Affiliate Marketing is a popular method of promoting web businesses in which an affiliate is rewarded for every visitor, subscriber and/or customer provided through his efforts. It is a modern variation of the practice of paying finder's-fees for the introduction of new clients to a business. Compensation may be made based on a certain value for each visit (pay-per-click), registrant (pay-per-lead), call (pay-per-call) or a commission for each customer or sale (pay-per-sale).
The most attractive aspect of affiliate marketing, from the merchant's viewpoint, is that no payment is due to an affiliate until results are realized. Affiliates also don't have to worry about financing inventory or fulfilling orders. Some affiliates also use Drop Shippers for their sites. Many of the affiliate programs we recommend are from a very reputable company called CommissionJunction.com. Once you have decided on what affiliate programs to join, it is very easy to setup a new account with them and it is also easy to track how well your programs are doing with their customized reports. eHarmony recently announced their sales increased by 67% due to Commission Junction's affiliate program.
Some e-commerce sites, such as Amazon.com run their own affiliate programs while other e-commerce vendors use third party services provided by intermediaries like LinkShare to track traffic or sales that are referred from affiliates. Many businesses, such as credit card and web hosting companies, owe much of their growth and success to affiliate marketing.
Merchants who are considering adding an affiliate strategy to their online sales channel should research the different technological solutions available to them. Some types of affiliate management solutions include: standalone software, hosted services, shopping carts with affiliate features, and third party affiliate networks.

In order to have a successful affiliate program, your site needs lots of qualified traffic. How do you get a lot of traffic without spending a fortune on google adwords or yahoo pay-per-clicks? One way is to optimize your site so search engines like google, yahoo and msn (which account for about 80% of all internet searches) will list your pages in the first page of their listings. A few years ago, there were a few tricks you could do to accomplish this, but now the search engines can easily sniff out spamming techiniques with their algorithms which could cause your website to be completely banned from search engines!
So, how can you get free listings in the top search engines? Here are a few tips for you:
DO:
Make sure your site is hosted on a unique IP address. I like to use ipowerweb.com and cyberultra.net since they offer many features and are relatively inexpensive.
Try to register your domain for 5-10 years to show the search engines that you have a serious online business.
Put your contact information on the home page.
<Put a unique, relavent keywords in the title and body of each page (no more than 8 on one page).
Make sure your keywords are in your directories, page names, URL (if possible) and image alt tags.
Include some useful, unique directories and glossaries related to your keywords on your site.
Create a google site map linked from your index page.
Consider using store.yahoo.com for selling physical products. It's web-based, easy to setup and yahoo.com is the most visited website into world.
Make your site easy to navigate. You may want to have top, side and bottom navigation areas.
Carefully determine which keywords your customers may use to find your company and your products or services you offer (use inventory.overture.com for ideas).
Spread your keywords in yur home page.
Make sure your html code is error free and make sure you don't have broken links.
Make sure your web pages load quickly. Don't use huge graphic files that slow down your server and use up your bandwidth.
Include a thorough FAQ help section on your site that explains shipping, returns, product guarantees, product details, etc.
Include your industry affiliation or certification logos on your home page such as BBB, D and B number, etc. to build a customer's trust in your site.
Update your site with new information at least once a month.
Write a press release about your site at least once a month. You may want to consider using prweb.com.
Send out a monthly newsletter to your customers.
Include testimonials from your customers.
Focus on good, unique content. "Hawaii Hotels" is a very competitive keyword phrase. Why does google hawaii-hotels.com get #1 placement then? It's not for their design.
Provide the means for customers to interact with you: chat, help sections, online forms instead of email links.
Get as many related, one-way links from authority, high page rank sites as possible.
Use boldchat.com and google's urchin to monitor the visitors and their visiting behavior on your site.
Use Web Position Gold or IBP to promote and track your web pages (if you can afford it).
Make sure the keywords make sense on each page.
Remember to change your copyright date on your pages. I won't buy from a site if the copyright date is 2 or more years in the past. I know some companies that have been out of business for years, but theIR website is still up and doing very well in the rankings!
Get listed on important directories like dmoz.org (free) and yahoo directory (expensive).
Study bruceclay.com's search engine relationship chart.
Get as many one-way links from authority sites with high google pagerank as possible. Use back link checker to monitor them. Use your keyword in the tag.
Your site should be useful, easy to understand, easy to navigate, easy to order products from, and easy to contact you.
Develop your site so it will be considered an authority on the type of business and products or services you offer.
Try to communicate what your site is all about to a user in 2 seconds. If you can't, they are gone! Your products and services need to be presented clearly and attractively with an appropriate call to action.
DON'T:
Use too much flash on your pages.
Use doorway pages and redirects.
Use frames in your pages.
Repeat your main keyword too much. (We know it is tempting).
Put keywords in unnatural places or try to stuff hundreds of keywords in one page.
Put a million banners on your page, they look spammy.
Put pop-ups or pop-unders on your pages. Arrgh.
Try to maintain hundreds of different. Focus on a handful. Get those going and successful before moving on to more, otherwise you are just wasting time and diluting the value of your sites.
Make sure the text of your alt tags describe the actual picture you displaying. Your photos should relate to your keywords.
Have too many outbound links, your information and pictures should be hosted on your site.
Use reciprocal links, try to get one-way links instead (but not from link farms) or from sites with the same IP address.
Use link farms, FFA pages to get traffic.
Copy and paste text or pictures from other sites. You will be penalized for that by the search engines. Write your own copy or have a professional do it for you. Use copyscape.com to double check unique content.
Make your text is not too big (no keyword in h1 tags) or too small (should be at least size 2).
Have site-wide links to a bunch of other sites. Keep outbound links to about 5.
Put links in your CSS file (you will get banned).
Make your site isn't too cluttered, since people can only process a few pieces of information at a time.
Go after common keywords like books, mp3, etc. Try to get listed for very specific three or four letter word keywords like "French Polynesian books" to improve your chances to get listed if that is the type of product you are selling. Devote copy related to those three or four words on the rest of the page too offering definitions, a 2 or 3 targeted backlinks, etc. It will also improve your conversion rates.
Always ask yourself this question when you look at your website: Does my site present itself as a useful, unique, relevant, world authority on the subject area I am trying to promote? If it doesn't, then there is a 99.999% chance that a search engine won't think you are either since there are about 7 billion other websites on the internet right now that you have to compete with every day. If your website meets the criteria, it will receive a high google page rank. The websites that carefully follow search engine rules will end up on top.
Avoid looking like spam at all costs. Keep seeking answers to your questions on this site. See you at the top!
